A brief history of Sandton
Before European settlement, the area that is now Sandton was held by a variety of indigenous communities, most notably the Tswana and, to a lesser extent, the Sotho. The Esterhuysen family on the farm Zandfontein was one of the first Voortrekker families to establish in the area. Sandton was founded on three initial farms, Zandfontein, Driefontein, and Rietfontein, as well as two later farms, Witkoppen and Cyferfontein.
The office of the Transvaal Administrator created Sandton as an independent municipality in 1969. Originally, it was primarily a residential neighbourhood with smallholdings and a rural "horsey" lifestyle that drew many upper-middle-class and Johannesburg elites. It was termed the "mink and manure" belt after that.
Sandton became one of Johannesburg's wealthiest regions, named after a mixture of two of its suburbs, Sandown and Bryanston. In the 1990s, a high crime rate in Johannesburg's CBD prompted many corporate offices to relocate to Sandton, which has since become South Africa's new financial centre.
